5 Blues Guitar Secrets That Will Make You a Better Player Sign up successful Play the note you are going to bend to first, get the sound of the note in your ear, then bend up to it, and try to get it to be the same exact note. Plug in to a tuner, and practice bending from one in-tune note to another, either a half step or a whole step away. Practice unison bends. Unison bends involve playing two notes, the note you are bending and the note you are bending to, on two adjacent strings. When doing this, take special care, and make sure that they are exactly the same two notes. To get started, practice the examples below: Be sure to practice this all over the neck of your guitar, since it will take different amounts of strength to bend in tune in various parts of the neck. We want to train our muscles and our ears to be in tune no matter where we are on the neck. 2. Learn Entire Solos A lot of players tend to overlook this aspect of learning, and just end up digging into individual licks they enjoy. The importance of having a lot of licks and ideas available to you cannot be overstated, but there is a lot to be gained from learning the entirety of a solo. Learning an entire solo gives you a chance to see how the soloist paced themselves, and how they built their solo from the beginning to the end. It also gives you a chance to see how the soloist utilized space. When we  look  at  just  individual licks, we dont get to see what led up to them, and what came after them. Its these aspects of a solo that really make you stand out from the rest. 3. Serve the Song Typically, a solo should serve the song it is within, and should be viewed as your turn to speak and convey how you feel. What you choose to say in your playing should serve the song in some way. For example, if its a slow song, it may not be the time to unleash your fastest licks, back-to-back. In other instances, a song may need all of your fastest licks. Keep your ears open, and think about what it is that you are trying to express. Does it add to the song, or are you simply letting your fingers speak? Dont forget that the song has a melody. You can quote it in your solos, or simply just use the rhythm of the melody to relate your idea back to the melody. Leave space. Sing along with your playing. 4. Repetition Repetition can be viewed in a few ways: repeating your idea verbatim, repeating the rhythm but changing the notes, or playing variations on your original idea and allowing them to morph into new ideas. This is such a crucial tool for crafting a good solo. If we think about it, do lyrics typically have a bunch of unrelated ideas through the duration of the song, or are the lyrics all along a central theme? Typically we will find the lyrics are all around one idea, but when a lot of people go to take a solo, they tend to play a bunch of unrelated ideas stringing them together one after another. Sometimes it works; a lot of times it doesnt. Wouldnt it make more sense if instead of playing 100 ideas or guitar  licks in a solo, we played three or four, and got as much out of them as we could? Here are some ideas on how to practice this: Play the lick, and have a different ending each time. Vary the rhythm a few different ways. Keep the rhythm the same but change the notes. Play an idea, then respond to it (call and response). 5. Listen to the Greats This probably doesnt need to be said, but always be listening to guitar players (and other instrumentalists) who you enjoy, and learn from them. French Pronunciation Guide Avoid These Common Mistakes! Sign up successful 1. “E” instead of Schwa What do Americans say when they’re at a loss for words? Uh…yep, that’s it! Say “uh” a few timesâ€"this is more or less the French schwa. The schwa, or neutral vowel, appears wherever there is an unaccented E: je, me, and seraine are a few examples. Do not pronounce these as regular American E vowels; it could change your meaning entirely. 2. Diphthongs Speaking of the French schwa, lots of Americans mess them up by adding diphthongs. In English, we close our mouths at the ends of vowels. For example, an American pronounces the word I by saying something like “aaee.” French, like other Romantic languages, does not have diphthongs. If you want a terrible American accent, go ahead and pronounce “je, the French word for I, with a diphthong. You’ll get something that sounds like “jay,” along with an eye roll from native French speakers. 3. Silent Final Consonants Many French words end with unpronounced consonants. Take, for example, the title of one of my audition arias: Les Oiseaux dans la Charmille. In this short phrase two word have silent endings: oiseaux and dans. When spoken, this phrase sounds kind of like “lez wazo da la shar meal.” Pronouncing the ends of the words ruins the smooth lilt of the French language. 4. American R instead of Uvular R In American English, we pronounce the letter R by drawing our whole tongue up to the roof of the mouth. The French, especially in Paris, use a uvular R instead. Only the back of the tongue (the part near the uvula, that dangly thing in the back of the mouth) goes up. Try doing it in front of the mirror and making sure the front of your tongue stays down. 5. French Combination Vowel U In the U.S., we often pronounce the letter U as a schwa (as in uh). In French, the letter U, as in “tu,” is a combination vowelâ€"the lips form one vowel while the tongue forms another. We don’t have combination vowels in English, so this can be especially confusing for native English speakers. There are actually several combination vowels in French, but this is the most pervasive one. The French U is a combination of the vowel “ooh” (as in room) and the vowel “ee” (as in bean). The “ooh” happens with the lips; the “ee” happens with the tongue. To form this vowel, try saying “ee.” Keep your tongue in the “ee” position while changing your lips to form an “ooh.” 6. Aspirate Consonants In English, we put emphasis on words using consonants, especially aspirate consonants like T and C/K (take that cat out!). Aspirate simply means that the vowel is followed by a little puff of air, as in the English letter H (hurry, half). French is centered around vowels, and there are no aspirate consonants. The letter H is silent (as in hiver). T and C/K consonants are pronounced dentallyâ€"farther back in the mouth than we say them in English. Congratulations Heart Students and Tutors! 98% Meet Growth Goals - Heart Math Tutoring Congratulations Heart Students and Tutors! 98% Meet Growth Goals Congratulations Heart Students and Tutors! 98% Meet Growth Goals June 29, 2018 As summer begins, we celebrate what was accomplished in the 2017/18 school year by hundreds of Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools (CMS) students who were part of Heart Math Tutoring. 98% of 893 Heart students met program growth goals in math, growing in two or more building block concept areas. On average, students doubled the goal â€" growing in 4.9 concept areas. The goals were set with guidance from math specialists at Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools and UNC Charlotte. Students grew from mastering 26% to 59% of the skills needed based on grade-level standards, cutting the skills gap in half. 89% of surveyed teachers believe students showed increased confidence/enthusiasm in math as a result of Heart. 90% of surveyed teachers observed growth in foundational math skills for students enrolled in Heart, and 81% believed Heart had a positive effect on classwork, class tests, or standardized tests. 62% of surveyed teachers said students became more confident and enthusiastic in subjects other than math as a result of the program. 100% of 599 surveyed Heart volunteers rated their experience as positive, and 98% would recommend the program to friends or colleagues. “We are extremely proud of our students for building skills and confidence they need to be successful,” says Emily Elliott, Executive Director of Heart Math Tutoring. “We are thankful for the commitment of Heart donors, volunteers, school partners, and supporters for making these results possible. GEM Grant Helps Heart Math Tutoring Expand Impact on Social Mobility in Charlotte - Heart Math Tutoring GEM Grant Helps Heart Math Tutoring Expand Impact on Social Mobility in Charlotte GEM Grant Helps Heart Math Tutoring Expand Impact on Social Mobility in Charlotte January 19, 2016 CHARLOTTE, N.C. â€" Jan. 19, 2016 â€" A $50,000 grant from Global Endowment Management Foundation (GEM), has helped Heart Math Tutoring (Heart) â€" a nonprofit group dedicated to helping students in high-poverty concentration schools develop math skills and academic confidence â€" expand its impact on social mobility in Charlotte. Through its employee-led grant cycle, the GEM Foundation provided a $50,000 grant to Heart over two years including $40,000 in December 2014 and the $10,000 in December 2015. The $40,000 grant allowed Heart to open its tutoring full program at Westerly Hills Academy in 2015/2016, serving 50 students in grades 2 â€" 4. The additional $10,000 will support Westerly Hills Academy’s program site in 2016/2017. Heart is a math intervention program that recruits, trains, and supports volunteers to work as tutors in high-poverty elementary schools in Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools (CMS). Hundreds of community members spend one hour each week delivering Heart’s research-based, structured curriculum. There are currently 450 volunteers signed up as weekly tutors to serve  almost 400 students during the 2015/2016 school year. About 60 percent of economically disadvantaged children in Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools perform below grade level in math, based on 2014-2015 North Carolina End-of-Grade Tests. Heart uses research-based assessments and provides volunteer-friendly lesson plans that target the gaps of each individual student. To date, 97% of students tutored by Heart have met program growth goals set in partnership with CMS. The tutor-student relationships also boost the students academic confidence and improve the flow of social capital among races and socio-economic groups in Charlotte. Why Social Mobility in Charlotte A 2013 study by Harvard University and the University of California at Berkeley shows that upward mobility for children in poverty is more difficult in Charlotte than in any of the country’s 50 largest cities. The Charlotte Mecklenburg Opportunity Task Force was created in response to this study and area foundations are also putting a focus on social mobility. “The GEM Foundation chose to focus on the upward mobility challenge in the Charlotte region, particularly for children and families, for the 2014-2015 grant cycle,” said Meg Morrison, associate director of Investment Operations at Global Endowment Management. “We selected Heart Math Tutoring because the program works to improve educational achievement, a critical aspect of increasing upward mobility. Heart is a great fit for our goals because it is scalable program aimed at early childhood education, one of the primary factors affecting an individual’s long-term economic and social progress.” Heart impacts factors that contribute to social mobility â€" quality of public schools, segregation and flow of social capital.
